Located just 15 minutes south of St. Paul in Inver Grove Heights, Rock Island Swing Bridge park provides a unique river experience. Visitors can walk out on an observation pier, which was once part of the Rock Island Swing Bridge, constructed in 1894. The bridge was a two story structure that supported trains on an upper deck and automobiles on a lower deck, but closed for good in 1999. The park honors this history with sections of track and an archway from the original bridge on display.
Ecological restoration has been ongoing at this site since 2013, with native prairie and floodplain forests being the focus of the site. Working closely with FMR staff, volunteers will help haul and remove buckthorn as well as other invasive species, tend native prairie plantings, and complete other important tasks as needed. These tasks will help further the restoration of the site, creating habitat that supports native plants and animals.
We will provide all tools, gloves and training necessary and look forward to working with you at Swing Bridge Park.
